Monotonik

Monotonik is an Internet-only music label that _exclusively_ releases electronic music online in the mp3 format - subscribe to our RSS feed to get info on the latest releases.

In their words: All of our releases are freely downloadable and distributable for personal, non-commercial use, and we've been releasing .mp3 and .mod files online since May 1996. We offer mellow and melodic 'idm' electronic music, alongside bleep-inflected retro videogame soundtrack stylings, plus selections of more uptempo breakbeat, drum and bass, and 'nu chill', courtesy DJs, groups, and producers from all over the world. Well, we certainly don't release many DJ sets here at Monotonik - in fact, the last one was over 2 years ago, wow. And the main reason for this is that there's very few good eclectic mixes out there. Until now, that is. We first heard the mixing skills of Chicago's ~aD being spread via, of all places, Usenet. So we're proud to present the first of a number of stunning DJ sets we're going to put out from him - hop on the "Pharis Wheel" :P So, why do we love this mix so much? Well,...

As if to prove that the first release wasn't a flash in the pan, monoRAVEik's new find Mistress Nine returnz with something just a little sparser than the last time, but no less effective nonetheless. Stripped-down industrial jump-up is the name of the game, and our Welsh siren is more than equal to the task. Harsh snares and a commanding vocal sample covered by an all-conquering bassline make this track one to be played loud, for there is no other way. Apart from her DJing antics amongst the...

After releasing a pseudonymous EP from Finland's Aleksi Eeben a few months ago, we kept an eye on hiswork further, only to discover the _amazing_ Commodore 64 work he's been doing with his self-coded John Player, which brings a 'tracker'-style interface to bear on the C64. And if you're wondering who this Aleksi fellow is and where he came from - well, as Heatbeat of the infamous CNCD, he was regularly voted one of the best ever Amiga .MOD composers back in the early '90s. So, given a few...

This immaculately dressed mix, by Slovenia's DJ Nova, of .MODs (and a few.MP3s) from the all-time tracking great, Sweden's Mortimer Tee, serves to illustrate MT's prodigous and gorgeous output from 1993 to the present day. Always operating beneath the radar, Mortimer is an obscure prodigy who demands your attention - like, why isn't this stuff major-label released? So, whether he's busting out the heavy hiphop grooves of "Streetjazz" or the mixed-up funk cut-ups of "Born...

Ladies and gentlemen, back for an encore, and WHAT an encore, it's our friend and yours, the incorrigible, indelible  Jake Kaufman , also known as  Virt , with the second installment of his astounding NES chip disc, now known as 'fx 2.0'. Since the mtk.release of the original 'fx', which was an entire imaginary NES soundtrack in pint-size .S3M format, Jake has been doing demi-deific stuff with Nintendo's sound chips in his primary career as a game musician. His "Atlantis: The Lost...

We were hoping this day would never come. That is, the day our copyright-ruffling cousins at No'Mo' moseyed back into town. But sadly, they're here. And they have a new champion, a Mark VII. And they absolutely insist that we release this 5-track piece of perverse.. well, quite frankly, c64.gametune.hiphop.mashup.evilness. So, if you're the type of sicko who dreams of Rob Hubbard's classic Commodore 64 videogame theme to "Commando" with Outkast's "Ms.Jackson" over the top.....

The long-awaited mixes from the number one scene luddite are finally HERE! Yes, the first of Subi's retro DJ sets is upon us. We hope you like. The general idea is to do a few of these, grouping by type. This time around we're concentrating on the proto-hardcore European brutalism sound that started when Joey Beltram came up with "Mentasm" and T99 turned its famous stab into an unholy racket on "Anastasia". So, not quite into the classic period yet, but certainly getting...

And this is where Monotonik and monoRAVEik really part company. Cosmopolitan he may be, but we just can't see h0l seeing this one as the right style for the IDM-ness that our beloved parent specialises in these days. Ladies and gentlemen, leave your brain at the door and grab a bottle of water. It's raving time! "Relentlessly Upfull" is just that. One hundred percent happy happy happy. Piano-riffs and synth-stabs ago-go with a few helium vocals and a diva (Penny Ford in this case)...

We got our Nine. Mistress that is, not millimetre. Here's a joke: What do you get if you put a vaguely gothic D&B chick, a 303, a female voice choir, the complete Macross saga on DVD and the rhythm section of the Cardiff Turntable Orchestra in the same room for four months? You give up? Well, I don't know either, but there's one crawling down your 'net connection. Love her or hate her, and believe me we do both when it's her turn to do the washing up, Nine knocks out the funky beats once...

...bloody hell, what were we drinking last night? Agh. Er. Anyway. It was Subi's birthday yesterday, he is now 365 days from Last Day, and we had a bit of bash over here in monoRAVEik city. Such a bacchanalian assemblage of best bitter and sexual deviancy has not been seen since the days of George IV. And in honour of this august occasion, and because we're all to drunk to track, we're finally releasing the tune Subi did at the Ars Electronica Electrolobby in 2000 (see here for more info). Only...

We here at Monotonik vehemently enjoy mixing up the brand-new idm goodness with some beeptastic sinewaviness from back in the day. And this sublime selection is the first in a series highlighting the little-known Commodore Amiga chiptune format,  AHX , which stands for 'Abyss' Highest Experience', and was a gorgeous effort to resurrect C64-style synthetic tunes later in the Amiga's life. So we thought - who would be the best people to pick the best ever AHX tunes? Why, we went straight to the...
